I've been asked many times by strangers to carve amulets, or make other pieces for them. Although this is flattering, I have never done it, for a number of reasons:
- Woodcarving is a very time consuming process for me. There are some talented individuals who can churn out 5 carvings an hour, but I am not one of these: it takes me several hours to produce a single carving.
- I don't know for sure, but I think a lot of the enjoyment I get out of carving would be lost if I was carving because I was contractually obligated to do so. One of the many reasons I enjoy carving is that it can be taken up or abandoned with no hard feelings.
- When I'm working on a project, I spend a lot of time leisurely dreaming up and sketching a design: once I'm done with a project, I want to try something different. Replicating one of my old designs over and over again would quickly become boring to me.
- Each piece of woodwork I make is unique, and it has no defined value: In my mind, that makes my carvings essentially "priceless." Jewelry and art, for many people, are simply methods of displaying how wealthy they are. By carefully keeping the monetary value of my woodwork undefined, I hope to discourage this sort of obnoxious behavior.
If you have a good idea for a project, and think I'd be interested in making it simply for the fun of it, you can e-mail me with the "Contact" link to the left, and we can discuss it.
